Yauya sits in the centre of Ljubljana, run by Laura, a young pastry chef, alongside her husband Bor. Their signature is the oversized chocolate cookie, and if you've spent any time on Slovenian Instagram food scene, you've already seen it. We went to find out if it holds up.
What we ordered
The chocolate cookies, a cappuccino, and a Greek iced coffee.
The cookies arrived with a full glass of milk on the side - a small touch that lands well. The cookies themselves were rich and flavourful, but clearly the last batch of the day. They were dense in the wrong way, and a quick warm-up before serving would have made a noticeable difference. Good, not quite great - which when you're known specifically for your cookies, matters.
The cappuccino was genuinely excellent. No complaints, no notes.
The Greek iced coffee was the disappointment. Too sweet - sweet enough to compete with the cookie rather than complement it, and sweet enough to flatten both. Skip it and get a second cappuccino instead.
The experience
The outdoor seats along the Breg embankment create a genuinely pleasant atmosphere. The space is a little tight between tables - a bit more breathing room would help - but the location itself is hard to argue with. Inside is warm and comfortable, with good light and a homey feel.
Service was friendly but surprisingly slow for a small order. Nothing dramatic, just noticeable.
Prices are city-centre prices - which is fine, expected even - but occasionally they don't quite align with what arrives at the table.
The verdict
Yauya is a nice spot for an occasional sweet afternoon, especially if the famous cookies have been on your list. It's not an every-week place - your wallet won't allow it and the experience doesn't quite demand it. But if you're on Breg and you want something sweet, Laura's cookies are still worth stopping for. Just go earlier in the day.
