Sushimama is one of those Ljubljana addresses where Japanese cuisine isn't just something on the menu - it's the whole point of being there. The intimate atmosphere and unhurried pace create the feeling of landing in a small Japanese bubble somewhere in the centre of the city. The kind of place where you know, the moment you walk in, that this isn't just another dinner.

What to order

We started with two soups — crab and prawn (€6.50 each). Both were excellent. Both were small. Worth ordering anyway.

Then the reason you actually came — sushi selected by the kitchen:

  • nigiri — fresh fish on rice
  • maki — filling wrapped in rice and nori
  • uramaki — inside-out maki with rice on the outside

24 pieces for just under €50. Not a single euro wasted. The fish was generous, the rice well-seasoned, nothing over-compressed, nothing dry. The kind of sushi you eat slowly because you actually like how it's made - and because there's never quite enough of it.

Dessert has its own separate stomach, obviously. Japanese cheesecake with vanilla ganache, strawberry glaze and matcha ice cream (€8.50). Light, moist, very fruity. Honestly - I'd come back just for this.

The experience

Sushimama has that dark, comfortable interior. Intimate - exactly right for a date or a quiet evening when you want to eat without noise or crowds. We went on a Tuesday at five in the afternoon, so no reservation was needed. If you do book, though, one small heads up - they pre-authorise €30 per person as a no-show deposit. Slightly annoying, but completely understandable when the place is full.

The waiter was excellent. Friendly, unobtrusive, present just enough to check whether everything was sitting right. Small details like that matter, especially in a restaurant where you're paying for the full experience.

For two people, including two glasses of wine, the bill came to €91 - around €45 per person. Higher end, yes. But in the context of the quality and the overall experience, it makes sense as an occasional treat.

Final verdict

Sushimama isn't a weekly spot - unless your wallet says otherwise. But it's the perfect address if you want to introduce someone to sushi properly, or simply give your other half an intimate evening worth remembering.
